I grew up playing fighting games mostly because when you went to the arcade you would play against people standing right next to you. In this format trash talk was much more satisfying and yet much more dangerous. Today fighting games fight hard for market share since connection latencies adversely affect how well someone can play against a human opponent over a network connection and fewer and fewer home game parties are being held.
This doesn’t mean that fighting games aren’t successful, it just means that the market has changed. The new fighting game that’s coming out soon that’s trying to generate buzz is Street Fighter Cross Tekken. I can’t express enough how awesome the combination of my two favorite fighting games sounds, and yet I remain reserved. After the debacle that was Marvel Vs Capcom 3 I wonder if Capcom can pull this game off without destroying everything I loved about both of these games.
Only time will truly tell, but I remain carefully hopeful for the possibilities.
